MEET YOUR TUTOR

My name is Thomas Magnus and I've been making, studying and performing music for the best part of 30 years.

Aside from the ubiquitous school recorder lessons and guitar group, I started out with a £100 second hand guitar and a great deal of enthusiasm to emulate my favourite bands and songwriters. I did not have a great grasp of how music or songs worked and eventually got stuck in a bit of a rut. However, my drive and desire to be able to write great songs compelled me to invest my time and money in study, experiments and practice until I went from writing songs that were just OK, to songs I felt really proud of. Which boosted my confidence to share them with the world. I went from not being able to tell if I had written a good song or not, to knowing that if someone didn't like it it was down to their taste not my music.

Although I have dedicated a great deal of time to learning and honing my craft something I have learned is... You don't need to be possessed of an innate ability, be an expert in music theory, be a virtuoso musician, be some kind of poetic wordsmith, and you don't need to hold any formal qualifications in music to be able to write great songs! Once you understand the basics of songwriting you'll have the confidence to turn any idea into an awesome song. And you'll be able to dip into your tool bag of songwriting knowledge to find the right tool when things are challenging, meaning you'll never get stuck. While creating and sharing my own music will always be part of my life I felt like keeping all this knowledge to myself was not fulfilling a higher purpose. Music is essentially limitless and there is room for everyone. That's what inspired my to create Tom's Audio School and to help aspiring music makers to write and produce professional sounding music.

I realise you may not care the ins and outs of why I created Tom's Audio School, and what you really want to know is CAN I ACTUALLY HELP YOU? Having been on many courses and programme I have seen music and songwriting taught in many different ways. Some good, some bad. I've taken these observations and created this step-by-step system to be efficient and easy to follow with a focus on results and development. I have confidence this will work for anyone who has a passion to write great songs. I hope you're as excited as I am for you to begin this journey. I'll also be in the private community answering questions, hope to see you in there!

YOUR QUESTIONS

What skill level is this program for?

You don't need to have any particular skill level to follow this course. Undoubtedly beginners and intermediates will see the most progress, but there is knowledge and skills in there for everyone. What is more important is a desire and drive to make music and improve your skills. And whatever level you are at right now there is support in the community as you improve.

How long do I have access to the program & when does it start?

You'll get instant, lifetime access to the course materials so you can start when you like. You are also at liberty to progress at your own speed through the materials. So you can whip through things you are familiar with and double down on the parts you find more challenging.

Can't I learn all of this on Youtube?

I'm sure all of the information in this course is available on YouTube or in books and University courses. However, YouTube does not offer a systematic approach to learning with a predesigned curriculum and community of support. I have taken thirty years of learning and experience and condensed it down into this course so you don't need to trawl through YouTube trying to figure it out yourself any more if you don't want to.

Do I need to play or own a musical instrument before starting?

It's not a prerequisite to get started on the course. When we come to the melody and harmony writing parts of the course you will need some way of working out what notes you want to play or sing. At that point we will look at different options together which will include free and cheap ways to achieve that.

Are you going to teach songwriting on a specific instrument?

My main instrument is guitar so I'll be using that and a piano/keyboard to demonstrate and teach specific elements of the course. However, it doesn't matter what your preferred instrument, or even if you don't have a preferred instrument yet. When we start writing the melodic and harmonic parts of the song we will look at the ways you can acquire a free or reasonably priced instrument as at that point you will need something that enable you to figure out notes and chords. But don't worry about it we're going to look at that when the time is right.

Do I need to have a Digital Audio Workstation before starting the course?

There is no need to have access to a digital audio workstation before starting the course. When we get to the relevant module we will look at all the options, both free and paid for so you can decide which is right for you. If you already have a DAW you are using that will be fine.

Is there a lot of music theory in the course?

My aim to to build your skills in a way that gives you usable knowledge where you won't need to rely on things like drag and drop chord packages. I know a lot of people fear music theory so my approach is to introduce the relevant parts of theory in relation to a practical goal we are trying to achieve whether that's writing a melody or choosing an appropriate chord. We are NOT sitting down and studying pure theory. We're going to take the useful parts and break them down into easily digestible chunks that make sense in a practical setting. You will not need to read music, and you especially won't need to sight read music. We will just be using the language of music theory where necessary in order to comprehend what we're doing. The likelihood is that you actually already know some theory, for example you may well know what a bar or a beat is.

Should I invest in Songwriting Unleashed before sharing my music?

There is no need to wait to share your music. Writing music and songs is a journey and a learnable skill. You don't start out will all the skills and experience, that builds over time. This course will build on whatever you've achieved up until now and accelerate your learning and skill level so your next batch of songs is exponentially higher quality. I would always encourage people to share their work as it builds confidence, bravery and resilience. Your job as a songwriter is not to please or appease people. Your job is to make a statement, or to try and make sense of life in your own unique way - and who is to say whether that is right or wrong?
